Famous Lines from Famous Books

First line:

'For a long time I went to sleep early.'

This line is from the novel 'In Search of Lost Time' which was published in the year 1913 by the author Marcel Proust who lived from 1871 to 1922. This author is also known for other, works including 'Albert Disparue' and 'The Captive'.

I would not want to read this book for multiple reasons.
1.) I cannot even find a summery of the story that I am able to understand, hence why I don't have one.
2.) It is way too old. The words he uses are words I've never heard of and it is way too hard.
3.) I am not interested in books from before I was born, 99% of the time.
4.) I would rather read stories that make sense to me from the start instead of trying to understand this one and wasting my time whilst doing it.

Last line:

'Then I went back into the house and wrote, It is midnight. The rain is beating on the windows. It was not midnight. It was not raining.'

This line is from the novel 'Molloy' which was published in the year 1951 by the author Samuel Beckett who lived from 1906 to1989 . This author is also known for other, works including 'The Unnamable' and 'Happy Days'.

I see pattern here, do you?
I do not do well with old books.

  1. Your commentary made me smile. Would it be bad for me to admit that even though I am an English/literature teacher that neither of these appeal to me either? :)
